TWELVE MILES NORTHEAST OF HAMMOND IN CARTER COUNTY, Phillipi Reservoir is set in a fragile landscape which surrounds this nearly 100-acre wetland administered by the Bureau of Land Management. The reservoir dates back to water rights assigned to the landowner nearly 100 years ago. It has been repaired and maintained since those days with the present reservoir dating back to the 1930s.
PROJECT PARTNERS, including the Bureau of Land Management, Ducks Unlimited, the Phillippi Ranch, and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, hope to maintain the area as a wildlife area for the long term. It has developed many natural wetland functions and supports stands of cattail and hardstem bulrush around its margin, with submergent aquatic plant beds also prevalent.
Much of the surrounding rangeland is sagebrush-grassland, attractive to sage dependent species of wildlife native to this area.
